End of School Year

It's been a while since I've been able to write on our blog as we've had a whirlwind of events, traveling, and visitors for the last several months. Now that kids are back in school, I have a little space to write and catch up. Schools in Costa Rica follow the South American academic calendar by starting in February and ending in December. So, at the end of school in December we, along with all the other families, attended an end of year ceremony and graduation for the kindergartners going into first grade--a big deal here with gowns and diplomas and the whole nine yards. Asa's class enshrouded the graduates in a rainbow cloth and Eva's class did a little reenactment of the nativity scene. Eva and her friend were shepards.

Asa's class did a self produced play where Asa was the outsider tourist and being rejected by the group--this was hard to watch--but basically a reflection of the class dynamics with Asa over the last several months. Asa has managed it as well as he can, but we don't want to subject him to this if it continues. We have talked with his teacher about this, and she seemed to be attentive to the situation. So far for the first few days of this year, he feels good about his social scene at school, is speaking and understanding a lot more Spanish (thanks in large part to the muchachos), so we are feeling hopeful.

  1. Annette, Thank you so much for sharing your adventures! Two years in India for me as a teen was life-changing and it looks like quite a year for you! You picked a good winter to miss in Alaska, we may have some snow left for you when you return. Miss you!

    Eva,
It looks like you're having fun at the beach. Build a sand castle for me and I'll build a snowman for you :)
